You open Photoshop and stare at the blank screen. You click around, making rectangles but it doesn’t look right, and it doesn’t feel right. This isn’t the first time. You’ve tried teaching yourself design and started small practice projects. But you always second guess your work because you don’t have the proper background. So even when you do make progress, you question whether it looks good.

You’ve learned the basic lessons that everyone advises. Hot and cold colors, mixing font families and types, everything. But there seems to be a massive leap from there to producing original and great looking designs. You can play around with Photoshop or HTML but don’t really know why you’re doing what you’re doing.

You feel stuck, asking yourself

- Should I draw everything out with pencil and paper or start with Photoshop?
- Should I picture a design in my mind first, then move to Photoshop?
- Or should I open Photoshop and play around until something nice comes out?
- It all leaves you wasting endless afternoons spent cursing your own design work.

It Should Be So Much Easier

When you’re a designer that wants to learn programming there are so many choices of how to start. There are websites and courses that teach programming for complete beginners and intermediates. But what about if you’re doing it the other way around, a programmer that wants to learn design?

All the available resources just teach you design theory. They talk about typography, colors and style in an abstract academic way. Not what you need. You just want practical advice that will get you started.

Have you ever visited Dribbble for design inspiration? Then left, frustrated, overwhelmed and even intimidated by their talent and creativity? How do you move from being a great developer without any formal design knowledge, to where they are? Confident designers, confident in their ability. Able to start a project and know how to make tweaks when things look “off” so that the design matches the idea in their head.
You’ve tried to teach yourself design. Some resources have been helpful. But you still struggle to turn what you learned into actual design projects. Either the material is too abstract, or it doesn’t talk enough about web design specifically. You’ve been recommended so many different books it makes your head spin. What you need is everything in one place.

When you start learning a new programming language you write ‘hello world’. What you need is a resource that teaches design in the same way. Something that shows you what language to use, how to start and what to do when you get stuck.

I love this book! This is exactly what I have been wanting for ages. The target audience is web developers who want to learn more about visual design. This is exactly me - I know how to program a website, but struggle when I have to design the layout and make it look really good.

I have been trying to learn graphic design for a while and not got very far - I have picked up countless books and tutorials, but most of them are either very basic or just go on for endless chapters about how to research ideas and build a storyboard or show the standard colour wheel. None of these have helped me become a better designer.

This book however is very different. It outlines a logical framework with predictable, clear steps to work through to create a design that should work every time. There's no waffling, fluff or filler, and there's really nothing that isn't essential to the design framework he works through. Chapters include the usual design elements you would expect such as colour, typography, layout and composition, whereas other chapters cover research, concept, brand and style. There is a chapter of exercises at the end which are challenging but doable if you've worked through the book.

There are lots of hyperlinks to live websites, many of which are creatively jaw-dropping, although there are also some deliberate examples of websites that don't work so well. In each case the author explains why they work or don't work. All the examples are there to teach a point, not just to look impressive or fill up space. This is where the ebook format really works well as many of the sites demonstrated are full of animation that wouldn't translate as well to a printed page.

There were so many 'A-ha' moments as I read through this. It isn't a huge tome of a book, but that's a good thing - it is focussed on the design elements that will actually work and all about getting you up to speed fast. It's not going to replace 4 years of design college for sure, but it's perfect for people like me who's main goal isn't to be a designer by trade but still need to be competent at it.

I'm so delighted to have found a step-by-step logical framework for creating a design - I always assumed brilliant designers just pulled miracles out of thin air, whereas now I see that it can be done as a predictable process. With this structure and lots of practice I reckon I could come up with a pretty reasonable design, which I wouldn't have said before working through this book.

I would thoroughly recommend this book to everyone in my position - struggling to get to grips with web design and not having a design school background.

I'm a beginner in regards to design. I've been actually pursuing design for less than 6 months so I don't have a process I tend to follow yet, and everything is up in the air when I start a new project. This book gave me a great framework that not only helps with web design, but with any design project. I'd highly recommend it to any entry-level designer or any more established designer looking to optimize the way they work.
There's also some great examples with a breakdown of what makes them great which helped with inspiration. Overall very happy to have this resource as I keep moving ahead in graphic design.
